Kindergarten

At Rookwood, we place a real emphasis on helping each child develop their academic, physical and social skills. In the Kindergarten as throughout the Lower School and Senior School, our experienced teachers and staff nurture, encourage and support all the children, ensuring they feel both happy and secure in our care.

From January 2018 we are pleased to announce a number of changes to our Kindergarten. We will now be offering wraparound supervision from 7.30 am until 5.45 pm, breakfast for children arriving before 8.00 am, access to the universal 15-hour entitlement for all parents for any session and we will also be accepting the enhanced 30-hour entitlement for eligible parents.

Our Kindergarten was recently highly praised by the Independent School Inspectorate, ‘In the EYFS the quality of teaching is excellent. Through continuous observations, staff know the children extremely well and tailor activities to meet their individual needs and interests. They have high expectations and foster an ethos of joyful learning through their own enthusiasm and dedication.’

We follow the Early Years curriculum and learning during the Foundation Stage is organised into three Prime and four Specific areas which provide the basis for planning the daily activities.

Prime areas:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development

Specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Additionally, during our morning sessions, the children can benefit from extra activities such as French, Dance and PE with specialist teachers.

We encourage the children to spend time outdoors and have a new purpose-built outdoor learning area that both Kindergarten and the Reception class share. The children also benefit from using the varied play areas including the pirate ship playground and also our extensive grounds.

Children are provided with a snack during the session (morning and/or afternoon). We encourage healthy eating and snacks are generally fruit, raisins, vegetables or breadsticks, sometimes sandwiches or crackers, accompanied by a drink of water or milk. We also offer healthy hot meals at lunchtime.
